MOBB HOME HEALTH CARE BATHROOOM SAFETY ADVICE

MOBB Home Health Care

One of the most important aspects for you to consider, is your safety in the bathroom. Here are some basic things to help maintain your safety.

  • Do not rush, try to give yourself enough time to make it to the washroom.
  • Make sure you have enough light. This goes for both the washroom itself and your route to the washroom.
  • Avoiding having a mat around the toilet, as this could cause you to trip.
  • Do not use your bathroom fixtures to hold on to (toilet paper holder, sink or door). Have the MOBB Ultimate Toilet Safety Frame (MHUTSF), and the MOBB Soft Grip Grab Bar (MHGRPU18 18” AND MHGRPU24 24”) properly installed.
  • Make sure things are all within reach
  • Never lock the door, as you might need assistance. If you feel the need to use a lock, use one that can also be opened from the outside easily with a screwdriver or coin.
  • If you can, have an outward swinging door, this provides better access in case of an emergency. Especially if you fall behind the door.

You might want to also consider fitting an alarm in the bathroom to make easier to get help in case of an emergency.

Make sure any equipment you get, is checked regularly for wear and tear and that any nuts or bolts are securely tightened.

 COMMON DIFFICULTIES

Walking

  • Do not rush getting to the toilet, you want to try and anticipate when you might need to go. Like when you wake up or before you go to bed. Or after a meal.
  • If you have a 2-storey place, consider having a washroom both downstairs and upstairs. So, you have easy access during the day and at night.
  • Try not to have any obstructions in your way, you want your route to the bathroom to be clear of obstacles.
  • If you need assistance to walk.  Consider getting the MOBB 3 Wheel Aluminum Rollator (MH3RLBE BLUE OR MH3RLRE RED) for indoor use. Also consider the MOBB plastic fluted grab bar (MHGR18 18” OR MHGR24 24”), make sure they are properly installed at a good height.

Sitting down or Standing up

  • Check the height of the toilet seat, is it appropriate for what you need. If it is too low, get yourself a MOBB raised toilet, we have them in soft material(MHTR2 2”, MHTR 4”) and regular material (MHTRSD 4”, MHRTSD2 2”), we also have hinged ones ( MHHRT 4”, MHHRET 4” ELONGATED) and we have them with arm rests (MHRTSA 4”, MHERTSA 4”ELONGATED).
  • Avoid using bathroom furniture to balance yourself or move around the bathroom.
  • If you need to sit for a prolonger period of time, move your legs periodically to avoid muscle stiffness.

If you use a Wheelchair

  • If you want to try and keep your independence, look at ways to do that. Like installing equipment to help you get on and off the toilet. Using the MOBB Soft Grip Grab Bar or the MOBB plastic fluted grab bar in strategic places or by using the MOBB folding commode chair (MHCMF) or the 3-in-1 commode (MHCMC) or the folding aluminum commode (MHCM)
  • Use wheelchairs with removable or flip up features like the MOBB lightweight steel wheelchair (MHWC1018) or the aluminum wheelchair (MHALWC18)
  • Make sure the height of your toilet is the same height as your wheelchair, this will make transfers much easier.

Limited Hand or Arm function

  • The right type of clothing will go a long way, wear stuff that can be easily taken on or off. Like Velcro
  • Look at products that can help you clean yourself.

Sitting Balance

  • Make sure the height of toilet allows you to have your feel flat on the floor.
  • Look at getting equipment that provides more support while sitting on the toilet. Like a over to toilet chair or grab rails, like the MOBB toilet safety rail (MHRTSR) or the MOBB folding toilet safety frame (MHFTSF).

Urgency

  • When it comes to urgency, first and foremost you want to speak to a doctor. This could be a sign of an infection or more serious issue.
  • Try and anticipate when you might need to go. Starting with when you wake up or before you go to bed. Or after a meal
  • Try having washrooms both upstairs and downstairs.
  • Wear clothing that can be easily removed.

Frequency

  • When it comes to frequency, you want to speak with a doctor. You could have an infection or medication could be causing it.
  • You could have developed an over active bladder. You might need to retrain your bladder or tighten your pelvic muscles.
